T.J. Couch among supporters making a difference at UACDC
The UACDC’s success depends on members of the community stepping up and choosing to make a difference in the neighborhood around them. T.J. Couch’s interest in making the University Area a better place to live and work goes back a generation.
“My family has always lived in close proximity to the area,” says Couch. “Both of my parents were born in Tampa, and the main unit of our family business runs along Fowler Avenue. My father, Ted Couch, Sr., originally developed the property when Fowler was being established as a thoroughfare, about 20 years ago. He is now semi-retired and passed many responsibilities on to me.”
After several years of supporting the UACDC as a donor, Couch became a member of the Board of Directors about 4 years ago, volunteering his time to attend meetings and support the mission of the UACDC whenever asked. As vice president of his family’s business, University Commercial Center, his expertise is in real estate investing. He currently provides insight into real estate projects as the UACDC moves into the area of affordable housing.
“The entire community has been missing some core features that every neighborhood should have, such as safe housing, recreational opportunities, and cultural development,” says Couch. “The UACDC is helping to pull these and other assets together to improve the whole community.”
Couch was a speaker at the 2009 Confetti Celebration. “The Confetti Celebration is the highlight of the year, where we get to celebrate the success of the center. It’s a great opportunity for our guests to learn about the accomplishments of the UACDC and get an introduction to our organization,” he said. “I had the best job of all as a speaker. It’s exciting to step into the spotlight and deliver good news!”
